For a long-time since my childhood, I was fascinated by Mercenaries. Soldiers of fortune, fought wars for money. Soldiers who were ruthless, efficient and never loyal are what history speaks about them.
The ancient warriors used to have mercenaries in their ranks that would come from far of lands such as - Greece, Crete, and Rome etc. for a large packet of gold, some for the thrill of being in a large campaign later to be added to their portfolio.
Like every child who used to travel into his/her world of fantasy, I wanted to be a mercenary and fight battles and crusades and bath in heroic glory. Guess even a crusader as they looked cool. Across the era, mercenaries have come in some form or other and today we have the modern day soldiers of fortune that fight civil wars and are actually well organised.
He flies in his black hawk, uses state of the art weaponry, well built strong and stealth is what he uses to his advantage. Associated with lack of loyalty, works for money and high stakes and some for large syndicates.
The thought of being this exciting individual never left my head and even today I think about it when I watch movies or read about them.
Couple of days back, my day kick started with a serious of events that was all involved in the arena of trouble shooting at work. Clients having issues in projects, your boss cross checking on you, you’re supposed to be best friend your ERP system being an absolute idiot by not helping you churn out the reports was all getting into my nerves.
I actually decided to release some stress and browse the Internet, while doing so I came across some articles on the Soldiers of Fortune. This made me ponder do I retire from my current profile as Deputy Sales - Head and join the French Legion? As I stared at my laptop screen, the ERP screen, the IM flashing, email prompts flashing and as it slowly switched into a standby mode, I saw a glimpse of the Modern Day Mercenary reflecting off the screen.
The reflection showed me the Mercenary looking much different from the soldiers of fortune, no black hawks to fly him around, no war paint, but yet as ruthless as they are and focused. A hard negotiator, latest technology at his disposal, able to connect to his colleagues while he is on the move, traversing various topographies, heat, snow, rain never makes him stop. Armed with information at the tip of his fingers, his loyalties with high stake holders, who could provide him the money and the target.
Failure was something that would tarnish his image rapidly in this chosen profession. Deception his lethal weapon. He comes across as a gentleman, calm, tanned and professional in his area of work. The young of this field learn it the hard way were a failure only means doom!
Looking around my desk and with a smile on my face, I realised in some manners I was indeed a mercenary, hired by a large syndicate, to win battles of sales, ruthlessly eliminate my opponents and paid for the job well done.
The Modern Day Mercenary as per my friends is the SALES MAN/Woman of today. A man/woman, who would come across your daily life as a friend, family member etc. armed with technology and information, works for the syndicate that pays him/her, travels around in search of newer and more challenging crusades.
Look around, you might see one sitting near you and he/she may look as any other person in your daily life - The Modern Day Mercenary.
